Once in South Wales, the Normands built a belt of grandiose castles to protect their recently acquired lands, veritable fortresses dominating the Wye Valley. A road crosses the sites of three of these stone giants: Skenfrith, Skenfrith, White Castle, all built in the 12 th century within a radius of km north of Monmouth. The grandeur of these buildings demonstrates the importance for the Norman people to protect their territories from the English. In 1201, the three castles were presented by King Jean to Hubert de Burgh who brought this new architectural technology to the continent. Over the centuries, these castles have become homes more than military fortresses. In 1902, they were sold by the Duke of Beaufort to three different owners. It was the first time since 1138 that the castles did not belong to the same man.Located near the border with England, Skenfrith is a historic village with a population of about 300 inhabitants, with a beautiful rural environment surrounded by hills and forests.
