Named the "City of the Prophets", Urfa or Şanlıurfa is one of the oldest cities in the world with a turbulent history and a place of pilgrimage. It is home to the oldest known shrine in the world, Göbekli Tepe. The atmosphere is conservative and the tourism rather religious. Multicultural, Urfa is mostly populated by Kurds and Arabs. You will surely see the men in Kurdish sarouel, a red and black band on the forehead, most of them wearing a purple scarf; the women also, but some of them, of the Zaza people, prefer the white embroidered scarf. The city was hit hard by the February 2023 earthquake.
