PRINCE OF WALES OPERA HOUSE
This former music hall with its many performances is Australia's oldest opera house still in operation.
It began life as a music hall, built in 1871. From 1881 onwards, it presented numerous performances until the opera house, renamed Roxy, became a cinema until the end of the 1950s. The building, originally made of wood, was then rebuilt in brick. The cinema closed in the 1960s and the building remained derelict until it was bought by the Gulgong Musical and Dramatic Society in 1974. It is Australia's oldest opera house still in operation.
