Built between 1931 and 1941 under the leadership of Italian Catholic missionaries, consecrated in 1947, visited by Pope John Paul II in 1993 and restored in the decade 2000, St. Joseph's Cathedral, located 2.5 km west of the city centre, stands out in the Ugandan architectural landscape. It is not the myriads of bricks, nor the Latin cross-shaped plan, that give this building its originality, but its neo-classical frontispiece, its trompe-l'oeil and its canopy... In short, a little air of Italy in Gulu!
