The name of the town of Gulu is (unfortunately) well known to those who have been interested in the political situation in Uganda over the past decades. The town was hit very hard by the fighting between the LRA and Ugandan troops. Ignored by most foreign travelers, Gulu remains imbued with a mysterious aura, as does northern Uganda. The area is now safe to explore. Predominantly populated by Acholi, the main city in the north of the country has a lively downtown area and quiet neighborhoods, especially in its northern part.
