As the place of the rounding of the same name, Saint Raphael owes its name to the Archangel Raphaël. The city has just under 50 000 inhabitants and is surrounded by vestiges of the Haitian defensive system, erected first to prevent French settlers from returning, then used during the post-independence North-South war. With the Saint Raphael cave facing the Catholic Church, the most notable point of interest is undoubtedly Fort River, where one of the most important episode of the American occupation in Haiti was held.
