Built in 1928 in the Art Deco style, the Penobscot Building is a superb achievement by architect Wirt C. Rowland. At 173 metres and 47 storeys high, it held many records at the time, including being the 8th tallest building in the world and the tallest in Michigan. Its base is granite, while the rest of the building is Indiana limestone. At night, the top floors are illuminated and topped by a tower with a red ball at the top, making it one of downtown's most recognizable buildings.
