Nestled between the beautiful sierras of Ambato and Ancasti, the city of San Fernando del valle de Catamarca, commonly known as Catamarca («fortress in the mountain in Quechua»), possesses remarkable colonial architecture. The neoclassical basilica Virgen del Valle on Mayo Square, or the San Francisco Church, are the most symbolic examples. The capital of the province was founded by Fernando de Mendoza y Mate de Luna in 1683, more than a century after the first Spanish settlers settled there.
