Located in the middle of a geological formation of volcanic origin, the Estancia La María emerges from the desert steppe, shaped by millions of years of geological revolutions. The 84 caves of La María were once the refuge of the first inhabitants of the region, victims of a climate that was inhospitable to say the least. Inside, paintings dating back some 13,000 years cover the rock faces. They are precious testimonies of the Prototehuelchense culture and are still the subject of much research since their discovery in the 1980s. From colours to textures to reliefs, the work of these nomadic artists is quite remarkable.
