Tandil is located 360 km from the capital, in the southeastern part of the province of Buenos Aires at the foot of the so-called Tandilia system, made of large landforms and large areas of wheat, soybean, maize and sunflower. The humid and temperate climate can be particularly cold in autumn and spring months, and sometimes even some summer nights. Of indigenous origin, the term (which means «the highest»), in relation to the surrounding reliefs, the urban center of Tandil was founded by Martin Rodriguez on April 4, 1823, as the military outpost under the name Fuerte Independencia, but could not find a respite against indigenous peoples only from 1875 with the arrival of Italian and Spanish immigrants, but also, in large numbers, of French Basques. It was also the site of a famous battle in the early 1870 s, between a group of renegade gauchos hidden in the mountains and new landowners. Tourism developed there at the beginning of the twentieth century when the city began to prosper. The Porteños and tourists come to spend a few days attracted by its landscapes of the sierras surrounding it and especially for natural curiosity, the wandering stone (movediza piedra), a huge symbol of the city, which stood in equilibrium on the edge of a precipice before its fall in 1912. A replica has since been installed at the top of the Movediza Park. Today, the city is famous for its cheeses and dried meat that you will find all over the shops and restaurants of the center.
