The park is approximately 1600 km2 in size and is situated along the lake of the same name, with the entirety of Highway 17 (Trans-Canada Highway) running through it. The park's southern boundary is 130 km northwest of Sault Ste. Marie, while the northern boundary is just 15 km south of Wawa. From the rugged Lake Superior coastline, this park extends inland to mist-covered hills and deep canyons whose exceptional beauty and rich fall colours inspired the Group of Seven artists. The Coastal Trail and part of Highway 17 follow the rugged, rocky shoreline of Lake Superior.
