To 650 km of Puerto Maldonado. In the tropical jungle of the departments of Cusco and Madre de Dios, here is one of the natural jewels of the country. Established in May 1973, it extends on 1 532 806 ha between 4 300 m and 200 m of altitude (we can observe a landscape of low tropical lands and the specific vegetation of the Andes).This park, crossed on 300 km by the Manu river , was classified Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1987. It contains the puna, the high selva in its largest area and the low selva. Botanists have identified at least 20,000 species of endemic plants, including many species of orchids. Among the 100 species of trees (cedars, mahogany, jacarandás) that populate the park, some reach 45 m in height and 3 m in diameter such as the cetico, the topa, the cedar, the tomillo, the lupuna or the matapalo. In terms of fauna, there are 1,000 species of birds, nearly 200 species of mammals, 1,200 species of butterflies and many species of reptiles, amphibians and insects.To see also, the archaeological site of Pusharo, in the region of Río Palotoa (petroglyphs) or that of Mameria. Several ethnic groups live together in this park, such as the Amahuacas, the Huachipaires, the Machiguengas, the Piros, the Yoras and the Yaminahuas; several communities have no contact with the outside world.It rains a lot between December and March. The best time to visit the park is from May to August
