This national park (Parku Kombëtar Divjakë-Karavasta) was created in 2007 on a former military zone. It extends over 224 km2 along the Adriatic Sea and includes a large beach (to the west), a vast deciduous and umbrella pine forest (to the north) and the large Karavasta lagoon (to the south). The latter is classified as a wetland of international importance by the Ramsar Convention. It is home to 45,000 birds, including endangered species such as the Pygmy Cormorant(Microcarbo pygmeus), Pallid Harrier(Circus macrourus), Screaming Eagle(Clanga clanga) and White-headed Duck(Oxyura leucocephala). But the rarest species is the Dalmatian pelican(Pelecanus crispus). Numbering between 120 and 180 individuals depending on the year, the Karavasta lagoon is home to 10% of Europe's population of Dalmatian pelicans (another colony exists in the region, on the Greek side of Lake Prespa). This is the largest of the pelicans (170 cm long, with a wingspan of 3 m and a weight of up to 11 kg), but also the most endangered of the seven pelican species. Observation towers are available (bring binoculars), and the visitor center at the park entrance provides a wealth of information. In summer, some 8,000 people visit the beach every day, which is not without its environmental problems. The park also suffers from illegal practices (fishing, hunting, illegal construction, etc.).
