Paintsville, with 4 000 inhabitants, is the headquarters of Johnson County near the border with West Virginia. Formerly prosperous thanks to the coal industry in the region, the city has lost some of its population in recent decades. The name of John C.C. Mayo, a wealthy businessman from the 1890 s who invests heavily in the mining sector in the region, is quite common here: Mayo Mansion, Mayo Memorial United Methodist Church, Mayo Trail (the U.S. 321 crossing city), Mayo College-Campus… In order to develop its tourism sector more effectively, Painstsville joined the nearby town of Staffordsville (less than 3 miles). The website of the Paintsville Tourism Commission is common to both cities. Paintsville's major asset is undoubtedly its museum dedicated to the U.S. 23, also known as the Country Music Highway, which runs through it.Outside of Paintsville, you can go to HomePlace Portes, which allows you to discover how a small rural community can live in the 1850 s. On the way, don't hesitate to stop at the Paintsville Lake State Park to admire the reflections of the lake. Finally, ten kilometres south-east of the city, it is essential to go to Van Lear, or was born and grew up by the Queen of the country, Loretta Lynn. Beyond the myth of myth, this journey in the mining landscape of the early twentieth century reveals what life can still be in the Appalachians. Important festivities (which take place simultaneously in Paintsville and Staffordsville) include the Kentucky Apple Festival (October 1 st weekend), Spring Fling (1 st Saturday of May) and Christmas Rim in the City (1 st Saturday of December).
