In fact, there are two bays: Cam Binh and Cam Ranh, separated by a point known as "finger point". Their deep waters have always provided the ideal site for a strategic port. From April 14 to 24, 1905, the bay was home to Admiral Rodjestvenski's Russian fleet en route to Port Dayot. On their arrival in Vietnam during the Second World War, the Japanese laid siege to Cam Ranh Bay. Later, the bay came under the control of the US army, which modernized the port, making the site, along with Vung Tau and Dà Nang, one of its main strategic bases on the Vietnamese coast. At the end of the war, the friendship treaty signed with the Russians stipulated that the Soviets would control Dà Lat, Vung Tau and Dà Nang, as well as Cam Ranh Bay. By May 2002, Russian troops had left the Cam Ranh base. Today, however, Cam Ranh is home to the 6 Kilo submarines purchased by Vietnam from Russia, whose purpose is to defend Vietnamese sovereignty in the East Sea against Chinese claims. Russian experts return to Cam Ranh... The bays are gradually opening up to tourism, thanks in particular to the superb 10 km-long Bai Dai (Long Beach), but offer little in the way of infrastructure for travellers, much to the delight of lovers of authenticity. Paillotes along the coast offer simple, delicious seafood dishes.
