MARKTHALLE ALTENRHEIN

The market hall in Altenrhein is an astonishing example of the architectural design of the surrealism-influenced painter Friedensreich Hundertwasser. His work is in a way a direct application of his paintings to reality, with the predominance of nature, the significance of colour, the negation of uniformity. Golden bulbous steeples, bright colours, curved lines, uneven windows and uneven floors, coloured ceramic columns, shaded courtyards and green roofs: the artist rethinks and breaks existing codes.
