Travel Guide Novhorod-Siverskyï (Новгород-Сіверський)

This city is surrounded by forests, along the River Desna, only 45 km from the border with Russia. This true jewel is both for its cultural heritage and its atmosphere over time and for the magnificent landscape surrounding it. An important fortress and principality of Kiévienne Rus, Novhorod was first mentioned in ancient chronicles in 1078, although archaeologists date back to the end of the th century. The city is famous because in 1185 Prince Ihor Svyatoslavitch organized his military campaign against Kontchak, the Khan of the Polovtsy. The battle proved disastrous for Prince Igor, who barely managed to escape. The actions of the Prince Igor were immortalized by the famous Épos of the th century.
