In the heart of the forest lies the headquarters of one of the country's largest logging companies, Congolaise Industrielle des Bois (CIB). The town is linked to the rest of the world by the Sangha River, once a small green Eldorado. Many Bantus from the surrounding area and beyond came to work in the concession, and Pokola was home to as many as 20,000 inhabitants. The CIB remains the town's main employer, with a wide range of social initiatives, road maintenance and building construction. In addition to timber, CIB-Olam is also involved in farming, with a test program to revive cocoa cultivation.
