This park located on the Alaskan peninsula, which extends into the Aleutian Islands, was created in 1918 to protect the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes created by the Novarupta volcano, which had its only and very strong explosion in 1912. Mount Katmai gave its name to the park, and there are fourteen active volcanoes. The last eruption dates from 2006: the volcano Fourpeaked awakened after 10 000 years! The park also has archeological remains that attest to a human presence in prehistoric times. The famous Brooks Falls, known for its salmon-fishing brown bears, is on the agenda of bear viewing agencies in Anchorage and Homer.
