3 km from Syracuse on the beach road, the Blue Cyanos is the other name of this small river which, as it approaches its source, acquires azure blue reflections. Its name comes from the mythical Ciane, Proserpine's favourite nymph and wife of the river Anapo, the river that runs parallel to it and joins it before both flow into the waters of the main port of Syracuse. It was here, in the natural fresh waters of Syracuse, that the Greeks imported papyrus in the 3rd century BC to make paper using an Egyptian method.
