Visit the Boyle coal mine, the last in operation, to learn more about the harsh reality of miners' work.

A coal mine in Ireland? Absolutely, and has been since the 17th century. Closed in 1990, Arigna was the last working coal mine. In a secluded corner, with a grand view of Lough Allen, a modern visitor centre takes you inside this former (now secure) mine, and discusses the harsh reality of working as a miner. Suddenly your office job seems like a piece of heaven... The Arigna mine has opened its doors to visitors and the tours are led by former miners, making this visit all the more poignant.
