TRALAENG KAENG PAGODA
Also known as Wat Traleng Keng, this magnificent Buddhist complex is still very important to the Cambodians who come here to pray. The site is home to relics from the time when Lovek was the capital of the Khmer kingdom. A huge four-sided sandstone statue of Buddha watched over the valley in those days, but today only the feet of the statue remain. There are two pagodas on this vast site.
Situated on a fairly high mound, the large pagoda houses four Buddha statues at its center, facing each other and the four cardinal points. One metre in front of each of the statues are the feet of the original statues, preserved in their original state. In this pagoda, you can listen to religious music played by a traditional orchestra that is often present. A small building at the entrance to the large pagoda is a place of rest and contemplation for the king, who of course doesn't visit very often either.
The small pagoda is dedicated to Preah Koh (the buffalo) and Preah Keo. There are numerous statues representing the two deities and their families. In the foreground, from left to right: a horse, Preah Keo's father, the original base of the Preah Koh statue, Preah Keo, Ning (his younger sister), Preah Keo's mother and a horse. The orange-robed Buddhas are those who have attained nirvana, and the two horses are the Buddha's vehicles. The original statue of Preah Koh was taken to Thailand by invaders.
