It was the ancient capital of the Khmers, after the sacking of Angkor and before it was also annihilated at the beginning of the 17th century. Eager to resettle in Angkor, then occupied by the Siamese, the Khmers established this new royal capital around 1550 at the junction of two arms of the Tonle Sap, in a position almost symmetrical to their former capital. But the Siamese besieged and captured Lovek in 1593, definitively fixing the Khmers in the southern part of their country. Today, Lovek is not exceptional, but the former royal city can be a pleasant walk for those who stay in Cambodia for a long time.
