The Al-Ahrash reserve is located in the north-east of Egypt. It is covered with acacias which allow the consolidation of the sandy dunes. The reserve abounds in fish (butterfly, parrot) with more than 1,000 species present. The reserve includes mangroves. The rains, more frequent on the coast than on the rest of the peninsula, are enough to maintain a luxuriant vegetation. Prevailing northeasterly winds sweep the sands inland year-round, and as they accumulate they eventually form huge expanses of dunes.
