Acquired in 1746 by Johan Friederich Knöffel, he donated the property to the Lutheran church on St. Margaret's Day, hence the name Johan and Margaretha. Since then, the plantation has also been known as "Kerkigron", Church Land. Until 1779, the plantation was used for coffee production, followed by cocoa until 1875, when the emancipation of 1863 freed 255 slaves. After becoming government property, it was ceded to Javanese and Hindustani immigrants in 1903, giving rise to the village of Margrita.
