MONASTERY OF PANAGHIA HOZOVIOTISSA
Monastery suspended on a cliff requiring a correct dress.
This monastery, emblematic of the island of Amorgos, is one of the most impressive in Greece and one of the oldest Byzantine buildings in the Cyclades. After admiring it from below, head towards its panorama. To get there, take a small path on the right (open the gate). Go down the path to discover a breathtaking view of the sea and the mountains. When you reach the road, turn left until you reach the car park. You will then discover the incredible monastery. Suspended on a steep cliff above the sea. This monastery, probably founded in the 9th century, is an interesting architectural feat as it is the equivalent of several floors and, from a distance, seems to have only one wall. The history of its foundation has fed several legends. The most widespread is that an icon of the Virgin painted by the Apostle Luke suddenly appeared in a boat. The islanders then decided to build a monastery on the coast, but everything they built during the day was demolished the next day. A priest, imploring heaven, suddenly had a vision of a worker's satchel hanging from a nail on the steep rock. So it was decided to build the monastery on this site. Attention: correct dress required, i.e. long skirt for the women, long trousers for the men and covered shoulders for all. However, skirts and trousers are loaned at the entrance of the monastery in case of forgetting or wearing Bermuda shorts .
