Its Chora is one of the most beautiful and authentic in the Cyclades, and the monastery of Hozoviotissa, embedded in the cliff, is one of the archipelago's must-see sites. Built on a rock around a 12th-century fortress, with its abandoned windmills and cobbled lanes criss-crossed by steps, this village captivates visitors. In the center of town, the Gavras pyrgos, a characteristic 18th-century patrician residence, has been converted into a museum and displays a collection of objects, inscriptions and sculptures found during local excavations. Its post-Byzantine churches are also well worth a visit.
