Located at the mouth of Sandwich Bay, Cartwright is a major coastal service center with a regional airport. It is reached by Routes 510 and 516 from Red Bay and is one of the stops on the Happy Valley-Goose Bay to Black Tickle ferry. It is named after Captain George Cartwright, an adventurous fur and fish trader who settled on the coast for about ten years in the late 18th century. He was the subject of a novel in the 1990s, The Afterlife of George Cartwright by John Steffler, which was a finalist for the Governor General's Award.
