BUNKER AN DER RUNSCHELT

Monuments to visit

Located in a wood near the village and marked "Bunker" or "B", this bunker can only be reached on foot. During the Nazi occupation, the resistance built underground bunkers in which resistance fighters hid. Five bunkers were inhabited during the German occupation in Kaundorf. The bunker An der Runschelt was restored and listed in 1987. A memorial plaque is affixed to the bunker in honor of all the patriots who succeeded in rescuing the draft dodgers from the Germans.

MEMORIAL TO THE VICTIMS OF THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE

Cemetery and memorial to visit

The bomb that makes up this very discreet memorial located on the outskirts of the village was found intact in a wood near the commune, after being dropped by an American plane on Christmas Day 1944. It was installed there in September 1980, in memory of the victims of the Battle of the Bulge which took place during the winter of 1944-1945. This bloody episode of the Second World War caused more than 200,000 dead, wounded and missing.

SAINT PIRMINE'S CHAPEL

Religious buildings

Built in 1653 and rebuilt in 1772, this modest chapel is a place of pilgrimage on Whit Monday. It houses an impressive white baroque altarpiece with a statue of Saint Pirmin. The bishop is said to have lived as a hermit near the cluse in which there is a well, whose water is said to have medicinal virtues (it was used to cure children's diseases). Be careful not to confuse the tiny hermitage, which is located a few dozen meters from the main road, with this building, which is located on a higher ground.
