POWERSCOURT ESTATE
A superb estate, consisting of a Palladian-style residence and extensive gardens created in the century, for a pleasant visit.
The superb Powerscourt estate, the county's most visited site, consists of a Palladian-style mansion and extensive gardens spanning almost 20 hectares. The gardens, created in the 19th century by horticulturist David Robinson and framed by the Wicklow Mountains, make for a delightful afternoon stroll through gardens, terraces, paths, artificial lakes and beautiful statues. Built in the 18th century, then abandoned after a terrible fire in 1974, the impressive manor house reopened to the public in 1996 after many years of renovation. Today, it houses a number of stores and a café for a short break. In front of the manor house, a majestic staircase, framed by Italian-style gardens, leads to the main pool guarded by two iron Pegasus. Still, we'll shed a tear at the pet cemetery for Eugenie the cow: " Eugenie. Jersey Cow. Died 1907 aged 17 years. She had 17 calves and produced over 100,000 gallons of milk Peace be to her soul... Take solace in the Japanese Garden, a delicate circuit of small mossy arches and fountains skilfully guided into tiny canals, spanned by little bright-red bridges.
Powerscourt Waterfall. 6 km from the manor house, but still on the Powerscourt estate, lies Ireland's highest waterfall (121 metres), particularly impressive on rainy days (yes, yes, it happens!). A pleasant place to stroll, ideal for a picnic, in a superb wooded setting. Not to be missed!
