The Ghrishneshwar temple, located in the village below the Ellora caves, is a major pilgrimage site for Hindus, as it houses one of the country's 12 jyotirlinga, a sacred lingam representing Shiva. Mentioned in several major Hindu epics, such as the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, it was destroyed by the Delhi Sultanate in the 13th century. Several times rebuilt and destroyed again, it was erected in its present form in 1769 after the fall of the Mughal Empire.
