The city of Nashik, with a population of 1,486,973, lies 180 kilometers north of Mumbai. Renowned for its temples, it is a major pilgrimage destination. According to mythology, Rama made it his home during his fourteen years of exile. This ancient city has long been known to the Western world as an important centre of Indian trade: Ptolemy mentions it in writings dating back to the 2nd century B.C. The city boasts numerous forts and majestic temples. But Nashik is also a dynamic city, famous for its wine production and varied agriculture. Nashik is also an important location for major companies: it is here, for example, that the country's banknotes are printed. The city's name is spelt either Nashik or Nasik. During the Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, the city receives millions of pilgrims in the space of a few days. The next Kumbh Mela will be held in Nashik in 2027.
