One of the few Buddhist temples in the north, built on the site of Buddha's second visit to the island. According to legend, Buddha came here in 581 BC to settle a dispute between two Naga kings over the possession of a throne adorned with precious stones. As a sign of gratitude, the two reconciled monarchs built a stupa to donate the throne to Buddha. None of this remains: the superb stupa and neighbouring temple you'll find here were built in the 1940s.
