VALLIPURAM AALVAR KOVIL
Vallipuram, which means 'sand city', was one of the capitals of northern Sri Lanka. It is said to have been founded in the 2nd century BC. The city has disappeared and a Hindu-Buddhist complex now occupies the place. The Vishnu temple there was built around the 13th century. The deity it houses is called Vallipura Azhvar. In recent years, numerous archaeological investigations have attempted to link this ancient city with the powerful kingdoms of Siam, China and Java, with which it would have had connections.
