NEWFOUND GAP
Newfound Gap, located about a mile to the west, was on the old road through the Smoky Mountains.
Located at an altitude of 1,538 meters above sea level, and marking the border between North Carolina and Tennessee, this popular tourist pass is a must for anyone travelling on US 441 between Cherokee and Gatlinburg. The Rockefeller Memorial was erected in honor of John Rockefeller Jr., a generous donor who helped create the national park in 1937 with a gift of $5 million. The view from here is particularly beautiful.
The name of this pass (Newfound: newly discovered), comes from the fact that it was found after the Indian Gap, about a mile to the west, which was on the old road through the Smoky Mountains.
