SUN STUDIO
A recording studio set up by Sam Phillips in the early 1950s, to be visited in Memphis
At the age of 18, Elvis Aaron Presley pushed open the door of 706 Union Avenue. It was a recording studio set up by Sam Phillips in the early 1950s. A penniless sound engineer and blues fan, he recorded Beale Street greats such as Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King and Ike Turner. Until that famous day in 1953, which changed the life of the studio and of the young Elvis. Sam Phillips wasn't there to welcome him, but when his assistant asked him, " How do you sound? ", the future King replied, " Ma'am, I don't sound like nobody ". He recorded That's All Right Mama in this studio, his first hit that propelled him to stardom. Sam Phillips' nose introduced him to other stars of the moment, including Carl Perkins(Blue Suede Shoes), Jerry Lee Lewis(Great Balls of Fire) and Johnny Cash(Walk the Line). Little or nothing has changed since the 1950s, and you'll feel the atmosphere of the time in the little café that serves as reception and gift shop today. The tour is led by enthusiastic young people who will share their love of the studio with you.
