This néogrec building was built in 1846-1847 by architect William Gibbons. The initial plan, however, was modified in 1853-1854 under the direction of Joseph Willis, probably following structural defects. During the civil war, the building, which had been transformed into a hospital, was one of the few buildings not being destroyed by Union forces. The other two are the Governor's Mansion and the Old Capitol. The presence of a Masonic lodge in the building would have played on the fact that it was preserved.
