The Mississippi State Capitol, or New Capitol, has been the government seat since 1903. It is located on the site of the former State Penitentiary and was designed by Theodore Link (1850-1923), architect in Saint-Louis, Missouri. Its dome reaches a height of 54 metres, overlooked by a golden eagle to the wings deployed. The State Capitol is the third rack built in Jackson. The first building was built in 1821 during the creation of the city and disappeared. The second, completed in 1839, served until 1903 and became a museum (Old Capitol Museum).
