Fort Frederica National Monument was built between 1736 and 1748 by British General James Oglethorpe to protect the Province of Georgia against the Spanish attacks. After strenuous fighting, particularly in 1742 (battle of the Bloody Marshes and Battle of Gully Hole Creek), Fort Fredica lost his strategic interest. It fell into désuétude from 1949 and was gradually abandoned. The fort actually holds his name from Frederick, Prince of Wales. This name was quickly feminized to avoid confusion with a second Fort Frederick located in South Carolina.
The site has been a national monument since 1936. Archaeological excavations began in 1947, updating the hidden remains of the fort, but also those of the city it housed.
