Fort Hawkins was established in 1806 at the request of President Thomas Jefferson to monitor the border of the new territories and access to Ocmulgee River after the Creek had ceded their lands to the east of the river. Fort Hawkins was a military observation point during the 1812 war and the 1813 Civil War Creek. It was from this fort that Macon was founded in 1823. The current fortified tower is a replica of 1938, established on the original site, near the Ocmulgee National Monument & Indian Mounds, a site that houses the ancient burial of the Amerindian peoples who occupied the region successively.
