This covered market located at the western end of the rue du Maréchal-Leclerc is an exotic stopover. The building, dating from 1866, is the first civil work in cast iron. You will find there articles of Malagasy craft industry, of which beautiful tablecloths, chairs, baskets, games of solitaire... Ideal to bring back small gifts for all the family. You can eat in the two restaurants of the market where you will taste curries of all kinds. The walls at the back regularly host photography and art exhibitions.

Une alternative aux autres marchés...les produits ne sont peut-être pas tous de la Réunion mais nous avons pu flâner tranquillement dans ce marché couvert ce qui par fortes pluies est fort agréable.

Le grand marché se trouve rue du Maréchal Leclerc . Le haut porche d’entrée avec une structure métallique vous dirige dans un immense hall divisé en îlots de vente. Au fond un petit théâtre ou l’on peut assister à de nombreux spectacles. C’est en fin compte le marché de la camelote. Très peu d’artisans et de produits locaux. On y trouve énormément de produits de tout genre en provenance de Madagascar et d’ailleurs… De plus les tarifs sont assez élevés. Pour les cadeaux à ramener en métropole choisir plutôt les nombreuses petites boutiques à Saint Denis.
