El Chaltén, "the mountain that smokes": this is how the Tehuelche named this mountain often hidden by permanent clouds. This mountain range has its star, the emblematic Mount Fitz Roy. Mountain of legends, but also of explorations, El Chaltén was later renamed by Perito Moreno. He named it after the sailor of the fleet that had led Darwin to the region: Fitz Roy. The official creation of the village dates from October 12, 1985. It is explained by the need to occupy and populate a region bordering Chile. Few people lived there year-round; however, the recent and spectacular growth of tourism has changed this. Although the village has only recently been developed, the area has long been known to mountain hunters from all over the world. El Chaltén is located in the Glacier National Park, which is the largest in the country
