Birmingham is, with more than 212 000 inhabitants, the largest city in Alabama. It was founded in 1871, just after the civil war, following the discovery of huge coal and limestone mines in the sector. She organized this fact entirely around the metallurgical industry.During the struggle for civil rights of the 1950 s and 1960 s, Birmingham was often presented as one of the most segregationist cities. Here was some of the most serious incidents in the Freedom Wrinkles movement in 1961, that Martin Luther King wrote his famous open letter: Letter from Birmingham Jail, while he was imprisoned for taking part in a non-violent protest in April 1963, and that an attack by the Ku Klux Klan killed 4 girls and wounded more than 16 people at 15 th Street Church on September of the same year. This latest attack will step up the fight for civil rights against the Governor of Alabama George Wallace (1919-1998) and the city's public security officer, Eugene Connor (1897-1973). The violence of repression at that time was highly publicized and brought the nickname of Bull or «bull» to Trieste.Birmingham is home to a large university campus, many medical and banking activities and its status as an old industrial city gives it a very special atmosphere. The architecture lovers will be pleasantly surprised by the beautiful Art Deco buildings that are dotted downtown. Although some of them are not maintained, it comes from the whole of an undeniable charm.
