The Wilderness Waterway, which can be traveled by canoe, paddle or boat, winds for over 100 miles through the marine sections and estuary of the park to Flamingo from Everglades City. This 8 or 10 day trip will give you an exceptional discovery of the wildlife, but it's better to be at least experienced! In these quiet waters in the heart of the Everglades, you can observe fish, sea turtles, wading birds and manatees. We might as well remind you that the river of grass is an incredible labyrinth of muddy marshes and mangroves where you will quickly lose your sense of direction, so vigilance is required. If you choose to paddle, some passages like Broad Creek are only accessible at high tide. In the Flamingo or Everglades City area, shorter trails also allow you to discover the backcountry and test your endurance for a day before heading out on the Wilderness Waterway. If the test is successful, be aware that a permit is required for camping (it is necessary to spend several nights in the wilderness). You can get one online. Once you are there, it is not mandatory to reserve your night in advance. It is better to like "wild" camping: most of the sites have no toilets. To rent canoes or kayaks, go to the Gulf Coast Visitor Center. Like the Flamingo Marina, it is also the starting point for boat tours.
