Haikou was named capital of Hainan Province when it was separated from the neighbouring province of Guangdong in 1988. In the north of the island, it faces the Leizhou Peninsula; only 15 kilometres separate the two provinces. Haikou is the industrious center of the island. Unlike Sanya, it has neither paradise beaches nor a nature with immediately accessible mountains. It remains primarily the main port of the island, and to that end the Hainan Economic Centre: and result, foreign tourists do not stay there. It is therefore an excellent gateway to the island: to the west, Sanya is one hour by train or less than four hours by motorway; to the east, the entire eastern coast of the island opens to you, especially Bo'ao.
