It is one of the jewels of southern Burgenland and a small picturesque town of about 4,000 inhabitants that has been known since the 1990s for its commitment to renewable energy. Built in 1157, on a volcanic hill overlooking the village, the castle of Güssing remained for a long time the property of the Batthyány family. Today, a museum is dedicated to its history: portraits of the owners, works of baroque and Renaissance art of both secular and sacred inspiration and a 16th century organ case. A theatre festival is held here at the end of June and beginning of July, usually highlighting the history or characteristics of the region.
