The cathedral of Essen (known historically as Münster, now rather Dom), seat of the Catholic Diocese, is a magnificent Gothic building built in sandstone blocks; it is the oldest monument in the city and a religious building of high quality. The building, built in 1275, has a octagonal western massif and a crypt dating back to the ottonienne era. Its interior also has a few restored frescoes dating back to that time. Its Gothic cloister (only a wing, destroyed by the bombing, was remodelled) is charming. It is in free access between the rue An Sankt Quintin and Am Porsche square, without the need to pass through the church.
