STIFTUNG ZOLLVEREIN - THE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX OF ZOLLVEREIN
Hundreds of coal mines have been active in the Ruhr region, but only one has been classified as UNESCO World Heritage since 2001. And it's for good reasons! The Industriel industrial complex in Essen is a masterpiece of architecture created by the visionaries Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer. The symmetry of buildings is impressive, and the design of structures gives the impression of dealing with a work of art. Yet the place was not at all intended to be considered. Until 1986, tons of coal were produced here by no fewer than 8000 miners working nights and days in the basements. Today, the site benefits from a cultural dynamic with museums testifying to the industrial heritage. But not that! Here, almost 1,5 million annual visitors participate in guided tours, permanent and temporary exhibitions, attend festivals or simply relaxent in the Zollverein Park.
