JAUME I MONUMENT

Inaugurated in 1965, the monument to King Jaume I - representing a sailing ship and a version of the king on a golden horse - is a joint work by Salvador Ripoll and Lluís Maria Saumells. It refers to September 5, 1229, the day when the Catalan navy, under the command of Jaume I d'Aragó, set out to conquer the island of Mallorca from the shores of Salou. The whole is quite contemporary, and both the horse and the sailboat are suggested rather than represented as realistically as possible. On the seafront.
