An important rail and road junction, Paola is made up of two parts: the historic center, on the hill, and Marina di Paola, the seaside resort, frequented by the inhabitants of Cosenza. The city is of modest interest: there are few traces of its past because it was partly razed by a bombing in 1943. Nevertheless, Paola is the highest place of religious tourism in Calabria. It is indeed the birthplace of San Francesco di Paola, in French Saint Francis of Paola, the patron saint of Calabria, and houses his sanctuary. The latter is located in the upper part of the city and is the object of annual pilgrimages.
